Paso Robles- Swiss Former Farmers Thriving in the Central Coast

June 17th, 2009

One of this month’s Gold Series selections comes to us from Paso Robles Winery, a venture owned and operated by two Swiss expatriates Hans Nef and Hans Michel (pronounced Mikel) that developed as a result of the pair’s long-term association in agricultural-related business endeavors.  Both grew up in Swiss farming families. “I learned at an early age to appreciate the role of agriculture in our family’s lives, and of its importance to everyone’s existence.” says Michel.   Upon meeting, they immediately formed Paso Robles as a grape producing company.  Over the course of several years, they planted more vineyards and decided to develop Paso Robles into a major winery entity.  “I want Vina Robels to express a unique blend of European heritage and American opportunity,” remarked Nef. “As individuals, the principles of Vina Robles are rooted in the Old World. As winemakers, we are inspired by the New World. But both worlds bring value to what we do, and we endeavor to capture this distinction in our wines.”

The growth rate for Vina Robles started slowly, and has remained steady in recent years.  The new 14,000 square foot state-of-the-art tasting room and hospitality center recently opened on Highway 46 East in Paso Robles. It sits nearby Vina Robles’ three existing vineyards and boasts a unique balance of modern luxury and old world charm.  Nef and Michel both credit their success to a number of key factors, including their Swiss winemaker, Matthias Gubler, who has carefully orchestrated all of the growth associated with Vina Robles. Brought aboard in 1999, Gubler brought an incredible winemaking resume that included stints in Switzerland, France and Italy, as well as an earlier role as harvest worker with Brutocao Cellars in Northern California’s Mendocino County.

Vina Robles 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was produced from Paso Robles’ Huerhuero Vineyard on the east side of the expansive Central Coast appellation. Awarded 4 Stars by Restaurant Wine Online and named a Best Buy with 88 Points by Robert Whitely of Wine Talk at San Diego Union Tribune, this Cabernet Sauvignon is very characteristic of Paso Robles, showing lovely soft red fruit and an alluring floral characteristic with impressive potential to age well. Vina Robles’ 2005 Cabernet is also Recommended with 3 Stars from Decanter magazine.

Please enjoy this month’s Gold Series shipment and let us know what you think of the Vina Robles 2005 Cabernet.

Fathers Get Free Gift with Wine Club Membership

June 10th, 2009

When you order a wine club membership for Father’s Day, Gold Medal Wine Club is giving Dad’s a little something extra in their first wine club shipment.  Special complimentary gifts like quality wooden corkscrews, tote bags, leather carriers or wine aerators add a little something special to the already great gift of award-winning wines.

Gold Medal Wine Club memberships make a great gift.  Because we select only award-winning wines, each bottle is sure to be something unique and special to enhance Dad’s life.  Each shipment includes two bottles, beautifully packaged and complete with an informative newsletter on the wines, the winery and tasting notes on the individual wines.  When you choose to give a gift of Gold Medal Wine Club membership, you are giving your father an experience to savor and enjoy.  What gift could be better than that?

Gold Medal Wine Club has been selecting medal-winning wines since 1992.  To win a medal, an award, or high marks from the most trusted wine publications, in almost all cases, a wine must pass muster by a committee of wine experts.  Although the people at Gold Medal Wine Club are wine experts themselves, they rely on the palates of other experts as the first criteria they use when selecting a wine.  Over 15 years they have gained a reputation for selecting the only finest most coveted wines to present to their members at a great value.

When considering a Father’s Day gift this year, give him a gift of the world’s best wines from America’s leading wine club- Gold Medal Wine Club.

-”Overall, this wine club offers the flexibility, quality and convenience that consumers are seeking in a wine of the month club membership experience.”~ Wine.About.com

-”Kudos to Gold Medal Wine Club for another excellent selection.”~ a satisfied Gold Series recipient

-”Just imagine, once a month, your close friends or family, each receiving a wonderful delivery of two high quality wines from the Gold Medal Wine Club.  My sister, who lives in another state, calls immediately after her gift arrives and is so ecstatic.  She has begun her own gold medal wine collection.” ~ Fruitwinemaking.net

-”So, my review? Excellent. Everything from the packaging, the initial presentation, to the wine itself was wonderful. There was a card for us to score the wine and return it. I’m not sure that got done, we did consume 2 bottles of wine after all. The prices indicated on the enclosed materials indicated monthly shipments would cost between $39-$43. All those in attendance said that was a bargain for the quality of the wines sent. One of the guests took the information on the Gold Medal Wine Club and is considering joining. Apparently the thought of getting 2 good quality wines every month for that price is too irresistible.” ~ Flosplaceonline.com

-”If you enjoy sampling fine wines, or know someone who does, this is one wine club that knows how to select and present some truly hidden treasures. They even offer four different levels of membership, from gold to platinum to diamond, as well as an international wine club. One of the better wine clubs you’re likely to find!” ~Wonderfulpessimist.com

-”And I love the Gold Medal Wine Club, even though they do not advertise on my site. I think they are a very accessible entry point to better wine for the newcomer. Just thought I’d throw that out there!” ~a comment on fermentation.typepad.com

tasting2We welcome you to try one of our new, exciting features.  Gold Medal is now creating Tasting Notes videos to accompany some of our wine selections. The videos feature pictures of the individual wineries, and information about the individual wines.  In each video the narrator describes the wines using vocabulary typical of a wine connosisseur.  If you are a beginner, watching these videos while tasting the wines will give you a sense of how to describe what you are tasting, and  give you hints about flavors to ‘look’ for.  For the wine aficianado, test your palate against wine judges while learning more about the individual wineries and wines.  Enjoy!

California’s Most Premium 93+ Rated Wines Deeply Discounted This Week

May 20th, 2009

About six months ago, Gold Medal Wine Club opened up an online store in response to demand from their wine club members.  The selections that Gold Medal Wine Club chooses for their five different wine clubs are rare, boutique, hard-to-find wines and their members wanted to be able to reorder their favorite wines.  Today, the wine of the month club announced that it has chosen to offer selections from their most premium club,  the Diamond Series, at a special discounted rate for this week only in time for Father’s Day and college graduations.

The Diamond Series selects only 93+ rated, award-winning wines and offers exclusive membership to only 500 customers at any given time.  “The fact that this sale is open to the general public is very exciting”, said Bradley Mansfield, Director of Marketing for the company. “These wines are the most sought-after, boutique, California wines and the discounts are so deep, up to 45% in some cases. It is the bargain of the year”.

When comparing prices between a sampling of the 23 wines offered in the sale we used Snooth (www.snooth.com) a leading wine search engine.  The discounts offered by Gold Medal Wine Club were outstanding.    The Paoletti 1999 Non-Plus Ultra Red Blend listed at $92.99 on Snooth was  $52.25 on the Gold Medal site.  The Corison 2003 Kronos Cabernet Sauvignon was $94.95 and is offered for $60.00, and the Lewis Cellars 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon which received 96 Points from Connoisseurs’ Guide and 93 Points from Wine Spectator was listed at $119.99 on Snooth, and $88.00 from the wine club.

Gold Medal Wine Club offers five different wine clubs.  Since 1992 they have been delivering only award-winning wines to their customers.  This sets them apart from other wine clubs who don’t typically guarantee quality wines.  For the general public, it makes the wine store at the Gold Medal Wine Club website a great place to shop for wine because every wine in the store is an award-winner.  How can you go wrong with that?

To take advantage of this unprecedented wine sale, visit The Gold Medal Wine Club Wine Store (http://shopnow.goldmedalwine.com/storefront/SpecialProduct.aspx).  Supplies are limited and the sale ends at midnight on May 26th, 2009.

Time To Start Thinking About Dad

May 7th, 2009

For Father’s Day, finding a thoughtful gift that will be truly appreciated is challenging for even the most adept gift-givers. There’s always the danger of cliché. Who wants to give Dad a tie, even if he wears them every day? The golf stuff and the fishing paraphernalia is so overdone that it’s practically a joke. Inevitably the Father’s Day gift often times ends up being a token with no real meaning. Dad probably doesn’t expect more, but he deserves more.

What makes a good gift? Perhaps something he could savor? Something he would look forward to using? Something that fits easily within the life he is living- not one that reminds him of the life he might like to lead, but can’t find the time. Something that makes him feel special? Something hard to find? Unique? The perfect gift would be something that brings joy, grants him a new experience, perhaps teaches him something and allows him to dream. It should be easy to use or challenge him, depending on his mood. Finding this type of gift might seem impossible. It’s not.

You can give a gift that achieves all these goals by giving a wine of the month club from Gold Medal Wine Club. Unlike other wine clubs, Gold Medal chooses only award winning wines virtually guaranteeing a quality taste and unforgettable experience. These wines are rarely found in stores and are made by small, boutique wineries and vineyards. Every month, Dad can receive a shipment of two of these highly coveted wines. The delivery arrives beautifully packaged and gift wrapped accompanied by “The Wine Press”, a publication describing the wine, the winery, the vineyard, the winemaker, with recipe suggestions and tasting notes. Each month, Dad can create a whole experience surrounding his unique gift. Perhaps he’ll even invite you over for dinner to share a great meal with some great wine.

Gold Medal Wine Club has been in business since 1992 and has the reputation as one of the leading wine clubs in the world. Whether Dad is already a wine aficionado, a connoisseur in training, or if he simply enjoys a nice bottle of wine, there is a Gold Medal Wine Club series that’s right for him. There are five exciting wine club series to choose from with the Gold Series starting at only $34 a month. The Platinum and Diamond Series feature 90 and 93+ rated wines. The best of the world’s wines can be sampled with the International Series, and the Pinot Noir Series is great for those who love the light red qualities of the Pinot grape.

Place your order now and your gift will surely arrive in time for Father’s Day. Each wine selection has received multiple medals or accolades from major wine competitions and is a special and unique gift that Dad will receive, appreciate and enjoy every month. It’s thoughtful, unique and satisfying. It is the perfect gift.
